Arsenal AKs like the SLR-106 cost much more than parts-kit guns because high-quality new parts and scrupulous assembly practices cost real money. Many shooters will ask why they shouldn’t just spend that money on an entry level AR from Bushmaster, S&W, Rock River or Armalite. The answer of course is that you can certainly do that, but what you’ll get is an AR.

If you like AKs – as I unabashedly do – you might be willing to spend a bit more for a good one: a most accurate and refined version of the most rugged and reliable rifle in history. An SLR-106 is still an AK, with most of its ergonomic shortcomings, but to most American shooters (who are familiar with crude parts-kit rifles) it is a nearly oxymoronic impossibility: a really darned nice AK.

When you get your hands on an SLR-106, your opinions about the AK platform are likely to be revised upwards. Way upwards.

Which do you prefer the AK-47 or the AK-74?

Do you know the difference? Given all the love for the Kalashnikov these days, one thing that always baffles me is the confusion between the AK-47 and the AK-74 . This confusion is prevalent even among law enforcement professional and military members. This article is intended to clear up the mystery behind the AK-74 as well as identify its unique strengths as a survival / prepper rifle .

Both the AK-47 and the AK-74 are Soviet built assault rifles designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov in the respective years (1947 and 1974). To make sure we have our terminology correct, only fully automatic capable AK ’s are true “assault rifles” by definition. The semi-automatic only versions that most Americans purchase are not “assault rifles”, regardless of what the media calls them. In fact the “ AK ” actually stands for automatic (A) Kalashnikov (k).

The AK-47 . which fired the 7.62x39mm round, was the Soviet Union’s primary rifle for over 30 years. During the 1960’s-70’s the United States started issuing its troops the M-16 which fired the smaller and faster 5.56 calibers round. During the Vietnam War the Soviets observed that the US round was more accurate, had greater range and less recoil. In the mid 1970’s the Soviets redesigned the Kalashnikov to fire the new 5.45x39mm (similar in size to the 5.56) and made several other modification resulting in the new AK-74 . The Soviets transitioned to the AK-74 and first used it during the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Today the AK-74 is the primary weapon issued to almost all of the former Soviet Union nations.

Although the AK-47 and AK-74 look similar and function the same, they share only about 50% interchangeable parts. The AK-74 has had several improvements to make it more accurate and reliable. A chrome-lined barrel and larger extractor claw are just two of the modifications. There are several variations of the AK-74 as it was produced in many different countries. The model in the attached photographs is the Polish Tantal.

What really makes the AK-74 unique is the 5.45x39mm round. This round has a long projectile with a hollow cavity toward the tip and a solid base. This results in a bullet that tumbles and deforms on impact creating significant tissue damage. Additionally this caliber generates very little felt recoil. According the Wikipedia the 5.45x39mm generates only 2.5 ft lb of recoil compared to the 5.56mm (M-16) which generates 4.75 ft lb of recoil. This translates to my 13 year old daughter being able to rapid fire the AK-74 as if it were her Ruger 10/22.

What are the advantages of the AK-74?

So what are the advantages of the AK-74 in the role as a survival rifle . Like any Kalashnikov . it is simple to operate, relatively inexpensive, and requires little maintenance. How is it better than the traditional AK-47 . It weighs less, it costs less, it has far greater effective range, it is more accurate, it is more reliable and has far less recoil. One of the best benefits in my opinion is the cost of ammunition. The 5.45x39mm surplus ammo is so inexpensive that it is almost the deciding factor alone for many people. Aimsurplus is currently selling a case of 1080 rounds for $159 http://www. aimsurplus. com/product. aspx? item=A54539R . Good luck getting 5.56mm or 7.62x39mm even close to that ball park. In fact some folks purchase a second AR-15 upper half chambered in 5.45x39mm just so they will be able to practice with this inexpensive ammunition.

What are the disadvantages of the AK-74?

So what are the disadvantages of the AK-74 as compared to the AK-47 . The heavier caliber of the AK-47 would prove superior in some applications such as barrier penetration and hunting deer sized animals. Additionally AK-47 magazines are less expensive and more readily available in the US. While ammo is available now, it would be less so, in a long term SHTF situation where you were having to trade or scavenge for ammo. All in all I find the AK-74 to be a superior weapon to the AK-47 in every other category (as did the Soviet military).

From the survivalist / prepper point of view the side folder AK-74 makes a lot of sense. It is a weapon that is highly reliable, requires little maintenance, and is very simple to use. It is reasonable priced (under $400 for a low end model), uses dirt cheap ammo and has virtually no felt recoil. This is a very effective weapon that could even be utilized by a spouse or responsible teenager with minimal training during an emergency situation. Additionally, the side folding stock makes the weapon perfect for concealing while bugging out or transporting without displaying an “armed” presence. Folding down to just 27 inches you can stick this thing just about any place. In the photo I have placed it inside a lawn chair bag to demonstrate a concealment tactic. My first choice in a SHTF situation would likely be my Springfield M1A Scout, however, in a real world survival situation (like Katrina) I probably would not be able to walk down the street with it and not attract unwanted attention. This is another area where a side folder AK-74 shines. It’s compactness affords it to go places that other rifles simply won’t go (small vehicle compartments, gym bags, anywhere that disguises the rifle ). In a major disaster situation while you are trying to survive with your family, the best defense is usually to remain the “Gray Man” that nobody notices. Having a concealable, magazine fed, high capacity weapon in a combat caliber that everyone in your group can operate is a real plus.

Instructions For AK Stock Replacement

Each of the four parts of the AK stock are addressed separately;

These instructions show an AK with a stamped (sheet metal) receiver. The Milled receivers have some minor differences in the buttstock and grip attachment, but the basic concepts are the same.

Also included are the "The Rules" -- four simple rules that will prevent virtually all firearm accidents.

Always start by unloading the rifle-- Remove magazine and clear the chamber, then keep ammunition away from the work area.

Field strip the rifle: Remove dust cover, carrier spring and bolt carrier assembly. Find a screwdriver that fits the buttstock screw slots perfectly (this is important) and remove the buttstock screws. Stamped receivers will have two of them (figure 1).

The quick and dirty method for removing the buttstock: Insert a flat bladed screwdriver into the large hole in the top of the rear trunion, and pry the buttstock backward out of the receiver (figure 2).

The rear socket formed by the back of the receiver is sometimes burred at the edges, which can make it more difficult to insert the new buttstock. Run your finger along the inside edges to feel for burrs (figure 3).

(Optional) You can use a bastard file to remove the burrs (figure 4).

Understand that AKs tend to be a bit variable in specs. Your aftermarket stock tenon is typically going to be made on the large side so as to fit most any AK. It may be necessary to file some material from the buttstock tenon to get it to fit. Insert the buttstock. This may require substantial pressure. Striking the buttstock into a carpeted floor or heavy bench top works great for us, but avoid damage to the buttplate-- don't hit it into a hard surface, such as concrete, without some padding in between. Caution: If you're installing a folding or telescoping stock, using this technique may cause damage to the buttstock's mechanism.

Once the buttstock is seated all the way into the receiver you can drill the pilot holes for the screws (figure 5). For most original AK tang screws a 9/64" drill is about right. Be sure to start the holes in the exact center of the tang hole. A transfer punch works well for this. Drill to a depth at least equal to the screw's length (usually about 0.9 to 1")

Again using a screwdriver that perfectly fits the screw, support the rifle securely and turn the screws in all the way-- hard against the countersinks in the tang. The forward screw on a stamped receiver AK must be seated all the way down into the countersink to clear the carrier spring support. This takes a lot of torque, so a big screwdriver handle, a driver that fits the screw, and a good secure hold on the rifle are all critical. Cuidate. If you find that you cannot get the screw(s) in all the way, you may need to drill a larger and/or deeper hole.

UltiMAK sells a number of fixed, telescoping, and folding buttstocks, complete stock sets, and individual components here. so you can put together your own custom configurations.

Pistol Grip

With the rifle field stripped, unscrew the pistol grip bolt and remove the grip. Be sure the grip nut is in the receiver so that it slants backward at the bottom (figure 6). Place the grip bolt into the new grip. Holding the grip nut in the receiver with your finger, insert the grip bolt and get the threads started (figure 7).

Tighten the bolt good and tight, then hold the grip and try to twist it back and forth, to get it seated into the trigger guard, then tighten the bolt some more. After a day at the range, you may need to tighten it again, since the grip may have seated further against the trigger guard.

Forend (lower handguard)

With the rifle field stripped, rotate the gas tube retaining pin lever upward until the gas tube can be lifted at the back and removed from the rifle (figure 8).

You can now access the forend retaining lever at the right-hand inside edge of the forend cap. Use a flat bladed screwdriver to pry the retaining lever up and around 180 degrees, so that it points toward the muzzle (figure 9). If your rifle has a stowed cleaning rod, make sure it is removed at this time. Now the forend cap can slide forward. You may need to tap it forward using a mallet or the plastic butt of a screwdriver (figure 10). Now you can work the forend forward, out of the front of the receiver and off the rifle (figure 11).

Installation is the reverse. The new forend may need to be squeezed inward at the sides, and upward against the barrel in front, to get it inside the forend cap (figure 12). This ensures a tight fit.

Some AKs have a lot more space in the front of the receiver than others. Being designed to fit most AKs, the aftermarket forend tenon may need to be trimmed to fit. A common #2 mill/bastard file is fine for minor adjustments, but a razor saw (sometimes called a hobbyist's saw) or even the saw in a Leatherman tool, may be needed for taking off larger amounts of material. Do not trim too much-- go for a good tight fit.

Be sure to rotate the forend cap retaining lever into its locked position before installing the gas tube.

If you're installing a new forend in conjunction with the UltiMAK AK optic mount. follow the directions for the mount. In some cases it may be necessary to first install the UltiMAK optic mount with the forend off and the forend cap unlocked-- tighten the optic mount screws most of the way to pull the mounting clamps up into the mount and out of the way. You can now install the forend and slide the forend cap into place. Then remove the mount screws and remove the mount. You can now rotate the forend retaining lever into its locked position. Your optic mount clamps are now held in place by the forend (or forend heat shield if applicable). Reinstall the optic mount and fully tighten the screws. Upper handguard

With the rifle field stripped, rotate the gas tube retaining lever upward until the gas tube can be pulled upward at the back, and off the rifle (figure 8). (If installing an UltiMAK AK forward optic mount. you need go no further with this section because the mount replaces the entire gas tube/upper handguard assembly. Refer to the instructions for optic mount installation)

Using a wrench or a bench vise, gently lock across the flat side portions in back of the gas tube. Grab the handguard firmly and rotate it around the gas tube axis until it is exactly upside-down (figure 13).

This may take considerable force. Now the handguard can be pushed straight down and off the gas tube (figure 14).

There is a metal pressure clip in most wooden upper handguards. This is not needed for the new synthetic handguard. Reassembly is the reverse. Notice that there is a definite front and back to the handguard-- It is larger in back and tapers toward the front. The handguard must be pushed up into the gas tube with some force before it will rotate into place (figure 15). Before you reinstall the gas tube, be sure the forend retaining cap is locked in position.

Now enjoy your work. Clean the bore and bolt, take up some ammo and do some shooting. Remember; The AK's inherent accuracy is generally underestimated. Nearly all rifles shoot more accurately than their owners.

Remember "The Rules" too;

1. Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.

2. Always keep your finger off the trigger (we like to say "out of the trigger guard") until you're ready to shoot.

The first three rules are standard NRA rules and will serve you well. We add the fourth, which comes from Cooper, as a way to help you think about your shooting situations in the field.

You can spot an inexperienced and/or undisciplined shooter a block away, because among other things, you'll see the trigger finger go right onto the trigger as soon as the rifle is in the hands (see rule 2 above).

" Okay so i got this gun as a christmas present. My first match with it, i realized how powerful it really was. Pretty much dead on accurate, and has a long range. It is full metal, but the handgrips are not. I had to adjust the front sight a little, but it worked fine after that. The back sling mount makes a lot of noise when it clinks around, but duck tape will be an easy fix.

Tough choices: The AK-47 or the AK-74?

As much as I like a great AR, I’m an AK fan at heart. I’m not pretending they’re equal choices. Far from it. The AR represents a slow technological progression. They’re slick castings and tight tolerances. An honest AK is somewhere on the other end of the technological spectrum.

I’m not talking about the counter balanced recoil systems of the new AK 12 . I’m not even lumping in the craftsmanship and mill-work you might see on the new Arsenal SAM7SF 84 . No. I’m talking late 20th Century Cold War leftovers. The timelessness of the old 7.62×39 AKs, or their predecessors chambered in 5.45×39.

I blame my obsession on this guy.

Looking back

The 7.62×39 may be the most widely produced rifle round in the world. That the round is still in circulation is somewhat amazing, considering its origins. The dominant American philosophy at the end of World War II said wars should be fought with high powered rifle rounds (which is why we ended up with the M14).

But others understood that wars were being fought at increasingly close distances. The 7.62×39 evolved from a desire to have a heavy round that would hit hard, if not as fast as its forefathers. Soldiers needed a round that weighed less, took up less space, required less raw materials to make, and one that produced less felt recoil. The 7.62×51, then fielded in the SKS rifles, evolved, just slightly into the round that defines rifles referred to as “AK-47s.”

7.62, 5.45, 5.56.

The 7.62×39 was perfect. Not quite a battle rifle round, not quite a pistol, either. The typical 7.62 round has a 123 grain bullet with a muzzle velocity somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,300 fps.

The American engineers were working out a similar equation, but discovered a smaller round, which traveled faster, delivered solid terminal ballistics. So for a while, the opposing sides fielded two very different rounds.

At least until the development of the rifle we now refer to as the “AK-74.” The 74 fires a 5.45x39mm cartridge. A 53 grain 5.45 bullet from a typical AK-74 runs somewhere around 2,900. Only marginally faster, really, but a lot less mass.

The numerical similarities between the 5.45 and 5.56 speak for themselves. The round is the Soviet answer to the success of the 5.56. Still, the 7.62 bullet works. The 5.56 works. The 5.45 also works. Which one is better? The argument is far from settled.

So what about the guns?

We’re not going to settle the caliber debate here. But there are some practical considerations when choosing between a 74 and a 47, if that is the question.

Let’s set up some ground rules. For our hypothetical comparison, let’s assume we’re talking about similar rifles. Two Arsenals. por ejemplo. The lighter colored rifle is an SLR 105. The other is an SLR 107.

Both have stamped receivers. Both have the same barrel length. In fact, they are almost visibly indistinguishable from one another. Those in the know will look at the curve of the magazine. Their ranges are similar. The 74 will kick a bit less, but it would be hard to quantify just how much less.

If we move beyond the ballistic performance for a moment, we’ll get to the real issue for most of us: availability . There’s plenty of surplus, and pseudo surplus 7.62 floating around. Even Winchester makes 7.62 . If you want hollow points, or specialized hunting bullets, they’re available. As of the writing of this, 1,000 rounds of 7.62 will run you $230. You can even get 7.62 at Walmart.

The 5.45 is much more limited. There are deals to be had on surplus ammo, still. And it is more likely to be actual surplus. But there are few other sources for ammo. Hornady makes some . Good luck finding it in stock. 1,000 rounds of 5.45 will cost $160. Not bad. That’s less than a lot of .22 LR these days. And get it now. Like it or not, the surplus can dry up at any time. Knowing when is the key.

This one is easy. Everyone makes a decent 7.62×39 magazine. Even Magpul is getting into the game. A good steel surplus magazine will live a lot longer than you will. No shortage of magazines and more and more being made everyday.

Bakelite 5.45 magazines

Magazines for the 74 are harder to find, but not difficult. Tapco makes some good options.

And there are some incredibly beautiful orange Bakelite surplus magazines out there, and others in black plastic and steel. They will typically start around $25 a piece and go up. During the frenzy of the last eight months, prices for AK-74 magazines tripled. But they’re coming back down to more reasonable levels.

There are parts kits available for both calibers. That’s easy enough to find. Stocks and forends, straps and other accessories are made for both rifles. The 47 still holds a dominant place in American mythology and that filters into the availability of the extras, but much of the extra gear is interchangeable.

But there are more reloading supplies for the 7.62. And gunsmiths are much more familiar with the .30-caliber gun. That may be reason enough to chose the 47.

Conclusión

There are so many different price points for AK platform rifles that it’s hard to make a comparison based solely on cost. I see 47s and 74s for sale on the used market for as little as $600. Both calibers are available in fancier variations and with milled receivers.

What do you want the rifle for? Looking for something to blaze away at paper targets? Looks like the rock-bottom prices on the 5.45 makes the 74 a clear winner. And it might be the choice for preppers looking to put away a gun, a couple of parts kits, and a few spam cans.

Or maybe you have visions of ammunition imports ending, and want a gun you can still be shooting when the spam can tap has run dry. Then it is the 7.62×39.

It is a tough call. I don’t see how you could go wrong either way. And I’d suggest picking up both, and an Arsenal SLR-106 while you still can. That way you’d have your bases covered. I’ve said it before. Read C. J. Chivers book “The Gun “. It should be mandatory reading for everyone . Creo. Any AK fan who hasn’t read the book is negligent.

This must be one of them there new AKs I’ve been hearing about.
